About the Company

VideoAKT AB is a research company based in Umeå (Sweden) founded in 2003. Our goal is to provide the biotech companies, research institutes as well as industry, with expertise, material, equipment, and research advice regarding tactile products and multimodal user interfaces.

Our main competence
We design, develop, and deliver the machine  vision interfaces and user specific haptic systems. VideoAkt main competence is in the area of in electro- and vibrotactile interface for industry device development.

Application Areas

VideoAKT AB works with experts to share the knowledge and experience in areas such as:

Tele-Operated Interfaces

Vehicles such as forest machines, mining trucks are today controlled at a distance. A tactile interface, e.g. through a joy-stick will substantially improve the feedback to the operator. It provides the augmented perception of the system to its user. To enhance the haptic perception we provide complete system to the operators of forestry and other teleoperated systems.

Biotech Interfaces

VideoAKT has a long tradition in developing tactile feedback devices for people with reduced or completely impaired sight. The tactile video system developed by VideoAKT can transfer visual information from a CCD-camera to advanced vibration patterns on the back or on the fingertips on a subject. Our system can also be used to give alert information in the intensive care room of the hospitals.

Security and Defense

The tactile video system developed by VideoAKT can be used in armored trucks to increase the visualization of the surrounding of the truck through tactile interfaces, e.g. vibrating patterns produced in the driver’s back seat. We provide complete dependable haptic and tactile systems for such applications.

Board of Directors

Olof Lindahl

Olof Lindahl (CEO) Professor Olof Lindahl got his PhD in biomedical engineering in 1993 and is today chaired professor in biomedical engineering at Luleå University of Technology and Head of biomedical R&D department at the University hospital of Northern Sweden. He has long experience as project manager and been responsible for business development of biomedical research results contributing to the establishment of several new companies. He is an inventor of 7 granted patents and has also founded several companies and an interdisciplinary research centre, CMTF, where he is director. Professor Lindahl was awarded the Erna Ebeling price 2008 for his scientific research and for leadership in the area of science and business in Biomedical engineering. He is a member of the IFMBE Administrative Council and his research interest is today focused on biomedical sensors, specifically resonance and optical sensors, and tactile video. He has published more that 100 scientific papers.

Robert Forchheimer

Robert Forchheimer (Chairman) is a tenured professor at Linköping University. His research areas have involved data security, packet radio transmission, optical computing, integrated circuits for image processing, image coding, organic electronics and bioinformatics. He has authored or coauthored more than 160 papers in these areas and also holds 10 patents. He is the cofounder of five companies employing more than 500 people. Forchheimer is currently in charge of the Information Coding Group at Linköping University. There, his main work concerns algorithms and systems for networked real-time communication, organic electronics and bioinformatics.

Haibo Li

Haibo Li (Co-founder) is a full Professor in Signal Processing in the Department of Applied Physics and Electronics (TFE), Umeå University, Sweden. He is now directing the Digital Media Lab, Umeå Center for Interaction Technology (UCIT), and working on advanced Human, Thing and Information interaction techniques. Prof. Li has been chairing sections at relevant international conferences and was actively involving in MPEG activities in low bit rate video compression. He has contributed to several EU projects, like VIDAS, SCALAR, INTERFACE and MUCHI. He has published more than 100 technical papers including chapters in books and holds six international patents as the first inventor in multimedia area. Four companies have been spin-off from Digital Media Lab and one of them was listed in the London Stock Market, 2005.
